Machine-Only Routine

Every exercise on a machine or cable stack: guided movement paths, a pin instead of plate math, and no barbell etiquette to learn. Two alternating full-body workouts, three days a week — the least intimidating way to start resistance training, and a legitimate way to keep building.

Progression

Alternate A-B-A, then B-A-B, resting at least a day between sessions. Progression is wonderfully simple: when you hit the top of the rep range on every set, move the pin one plate down. Machine brands differ, so log the machine and the setting (seat height, pin position) in your FYL notes — your numbers only mean something on the same machine.

Substitutions

Gyms stock different machines — if yours lacks one, the machine section and cable section of the exercise directory list stand-ins for every station. Any chest press replaces any chest press; the pattern is what counts.

FAQ

Are machines as effective as free weights?

For building muscle, machines are close to equal — recent research shows similar hypertrophy when effort is matched. Free weights train balance and transfer better to sport, which is why the classic path is machines first, barbells later. Neither is wasted time.

What order should I do the machines in?

Big muscles first, as listed: legs and chest or back before shoulders, arms and core. If a machine is taken, do the next exercise and circle back — on a full-body day the order between muscle groups matters very little.

When should I move on from machine-only training?

Whenever curiosity outweighs intimidation — there is no deadline. A natural next step is the Full-Body 3x program, which mixes barbells and machines, or 5x5 if strength is calling. Many lifters happily train on machines for years.
